(History of Remixers United)

Sometimes, Remixers United (RU) will receive comments and questions regarding the history of RU and competing sites, particularly those with similar names.  This section should explain RU's history to help reduce those questions and comments.  Of course, if you have a question, you can always contact RU HERE.
Up to 2010 (planning stages

As a DJ, and eventually, a remixer, there was (and is) always a passion to 1) make great mixes, 2) improve with experience, and 3) get recognized.  Recognition is human nature, and a drive to continue doing whatever your passion is.  These three elements helped create Remixers United.

For me, DonnyO'Bryan, I was always impressed by the remixes of Madonna and other artists.  I started DJ-ing at clubs in the mid 1980s and enjoyed watching people dance on the floor to the music I spun.  Back in the 1980s, the remixes available (via vinyl 12-inch singles) were more than not "extended" versions, based off the original album tracks.  "Dub Mixes" started surfacing, and eventually, entirely new sounds and music styles were created for remixes (now in CD-format).  I, like other remixers, started finding extreme interest in not just playing the music, but in the remixes themselves.  Admittedly, legal DJ remix services helped pave my way to making my own mixes.  Hell, I thought, if they could edit mixes, why can't I?

So the remix experience began.  I, like many other remixers, began editing my own mixes.  At first was tape to tape editing, including an infamous "pause button" edit on cassette.  Then in the late 1990s, with the popularity of home computers and music editing programs, the remixing world for fan mixers was popular everywhere you turned.

I mixed Madonna usually, as she was (is) my favorite singer.  All hail the queen!  By 2010, I had remixed God only knows how many remixes and wanted to share them with the world.  It was in 2010, that I was experiencing all three elements: making mixes, improving with experience, and wanting to get recognized.  Without truly knowing it, I had already developed a fan base.  But I wanted the next step.  I wanted to move beyond the fans - I wanted to be recognized by my remixing peers.

In the years before, I was involved in a MIRC forum for Madonna.  The subject of remixing a song appeared.  It was a contest.  There was no prize - other than recognition.  A Madonna song was chosen, and whoever wanted to remix the song could enter.  The song was "Die Another Day" (that should help you determine the year, as it had just came out).  I submitted 2 remixes to the song.  After DAD, a second contest happened, this time with the song "Amazing."

THOSE were the days.  The experience of making remixes alongside other fan remixers/peers was simply...amazing.  And it was those experiences that helped me create Remixers United in 2010.  I recall it was the last few months of 2010, and I said to myself, "Why can't I do that again?  Why not find a format where other remixrs can work together?  To unite with each other on a Madonna project?  We would be, simply, remixers united.

So there it was, late 2010, a fantastic idea sitting there waiting to happen.  I started to reach out to other Madonna remixers around the world, finding them through the internet, specifically Madonna forums and blogs (primarily madonnachille, Holiday Share, and Madonna Unusual MPAP).  By Christmas, I had contacted a small handful of remixers and told them I wanted them to make a mix for a free compilation called "Remixers United."  Everyone agreed, and a date was set: February 2011.  This gave the remixers 3 months or more to create a mix.  REMIXERS UNITED was born.

2011 (RU1 & RU2)

In February, 2011, RU's first compilation was released.  Called simply "Remixers United," it was a hit.  Fans were overall impressed at the idea of bringing together so much talent from around the world.  Remixers included myself, Dubtronic, Inco, New Puzzle, Idaho and Lukesavant - 6 remixers with 12 tracks total.

By summer, the excitement had lost its steam, but some fans were still asking for more.  This made me decide to put together a "sequel" compilation, and call it "Remixers United 2."  So starting late summer, I started contacting remixers again, asking for their contributions for RU2.  This time, more remixers helped up, bringing the total number of tracks to 20.  The cover and back cover design would be created by the same individual who designed RU1, an amazing and skilled man named William Vipond Tait

RU2 was released Christmas morning, 2011 - the perfect gift for Madonna fans.  And they apparently loved it.  20 remixes from great remixers: myself, Dubtronic, Inco, New Puzzle, CoSmiK, Modern, Dikkie, and Lukesavant.  With the success of RU2, it was a done deal: RU would release a new compilaiton each year.Inc

2012 (RU3, & Producer Series, & CD-Singles)

After the success of RU1 and RU2, two things happened: 1) friendships with my remixing peers were made, and 2) the urge to become BIG surfaced.  The strongest relationship I found from the production and release of the first two compilations was one with Dubtronic.  I admired him as much as he did me.  I threw out the idea of continuing the RU compilations yearly, and he agreed that it was a great idea.  So we started contacting the remixers again - all of the remixers from the past compilations - and attempted to get new remixers as well.

Another friendship that developed was with Lukesavant.  His work was amazing, and we began to corrospond regularly, especially through facebook.  He asked me if I considered taking RU all the way: a website, cross-promotion through other Madonna sites, making a facebook page specifically for RU.  I was on cloud nine, and excited of growing larger, but I had one problem: at that time, I had little to no experience on how to make websites or a facebook page for RU, or how to market RU to a bigger audience.  He said it was simple, and he would be happy to set up a facebook page for RU, and take over the marketing side of the business.  I was in awe - what he was offering was amazing and could do only good things for RU.  He started marketing to many people, using his awesome connections.  His vission was the same as my own: to see RU become the biggest thing it could be!  He even created a twitter account.  He contacted - and pursuaded - some other remixers that I had never been able to reach - and they were on board to participate in RU3!  He also created RU's facebook page, adding the name Madonna in front of it.  At first I was nervous about the use of her name but he convinced me that it was a good thing - and he was right!  The upcoming release of RU3 was snowballing - everyone was talking about it.

With me as Executive Producer, Dubtronic and Lukesavant as producers, and Lukesavant handling marketing and facebook design, RU3 turned out to be another great release: 3 CDs comprising 33 tracks from 17 remixers: myself, Dubtronic, Lukesavant, Inco, New Puzzle, FurchiDC, Guyom, CoSmiK, Dens54, Lukes, Maxim Andreev, Flo, Skin Bruno, Sebatronik, Dikkie, and RMMC.

After RU3's release, it was time to offer some more fun releases.  Up first was the producer series, a special way to say thank you to those who remixed for RU.  In 2012, we presented "Madonna by Dubtronic," a collection of greatest remixes from an amazing remixer.

After that, it was suggested to release CD-singles of one specific song, remixed by several remixers.  Our first CD-single was "Give Me All Your Lovin'" followed by "Girl Gone Wild" and "Turn Up The Radio."  These CD-singles featured fantastic remixes, both new and old.

By the year's end, it was time to start planning out next year's releases.  RU was becoming big indeed!

2013 (1st Album Tribute & RU4)

Early on, it was pointed out to me that the 30-year anniversary of Madonna's first album was approaching in the fall, and that it would be a great idea to pay tribute to it.  I agreed, and we set the release date for Summer 2013 instead of November (because we had already planned on releasing RU4 on October 31.)

The 1st Album Tribute was a double CD with great tracks by several remixers.

More CD singles were released, as well as more producer series, including Lukesavant's and my own.

When planning out RU4, it was easy to see how many tracks we wanted to have.  Since RU3 had 33 tracks, it seemed inevidible that RU4 should have 44 (and the future's RU5 should have 55).

Two lessons were taught to me during the history of RU, and more specifically, the production of RU4: Each compilation is more difficult to produce than any issue before - and friendships will be tested - with end results not necessarily pleasant.

On and off throughout the year, there were internal struggles between myself and one of my producers, Lukesavant.  Instead of airing out our disagreements here, I would rather just say that we agreed to part ways after the upcoming release of RU4.  Since he created RU's facebook page, he had legal right to keep it.  Facebook would not allow him to change the name.  On my end, the situation forced me to learn how to create a RU website and new RU facebook page.

Admittedly, this does confuse some fans who don't understand how come there are two facebook pages with the name Remixers United.

This is a problem neither of us can fix, and since it is out of our control, there is no need to fret on it.  My re-created new facebook page does not have the number of likes as the original RU facebook page that I no longer have connection with.  After some soul searching, I find myself remembering the emotions I had in the beginning: the LOVE of what I do.  The LOVE of remixing.  So the likes are no longer important - although very much appreciated when my RU facebook page does get the likes.  I am content with Remixers United as it is.  It is not a competition to me when I remember that it's all about the love of remixing and satisfaction of my personal accomplishments.

2014 (Official Website, LUV, Britney United, LAV Tribute, Megamix, Summer Fever, & RU5)

With a new facebook page to replace the one my ex-producer controlled, I was ready to start a brand new beginning.  I taught myself (although very reluctantly) to create a web page for RU.  The Remixers United website and domain name became a new focus after making the new facebook page.  And when the new pages ready at the start of a new year, I took a deep breath and approached the year with confidence.

In February 2014, I decided to take on a new "theme" - a LOVE theme, perfect for Valentine's Day.  The RU compilation called LUV was released with each remix (new and old) focusing on that famous 4 letter emotion.

Meanwhile, remixers were already putting together tracks for the April release of "Like A Virgin," a 30-year anniversary tribute.  Just as we had done with the first album tribute, the release was a 20-track release of new and old mixes.

In June 2014, it was time to pay tribute to another diva-wannabe: Britney Spears.  RU released a compilation of all new mixes called "Britney United."

August 2014 proved that summer was at its hottest with a summer compilation of new mixes called "Summer Fever" - and just like the title implies, the reviews were smokin'.

In September, RU released a new compilation of Madonna megamixes, both old and new, on a 2-CD compilation.

And finally, October came around with RU5: a 5 CD compilation of 20+ remixers compiling 55 brand new tracks.

2015 (LUV2, RU Remix Videos, & Beyond)

Madonna released her Rebel Heart - and its first single, "Living For Love" - just in time for Valentine's Day.  I remembered that on Valentine's day the previous year, RU released a compilation called "LUV".  So it seemed only appropriate that RU releases a part 2 compilation of LUV, with focus on the song "Living For Love."  After the release of LUV2, Videos were made for each remix, as a way of saying thank you to each remixer who participated.

What's ahead? My goal is to pay tribute to "True Blue" as well as "Rebel Heart" (although Rebel Heart may be more of a CD-single compilation.  I would also like to release a "Diva" compilation sometime, as well as a Christmas release of RU6.

THANK YOU TO EVERONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED ME AND REMIXERS UNITED OVER THE YEARS!  Don't give up on me.  I will never give up on making great CDs for you!
